Train Was Speeding, America First

Train wreck: An Amtrak train that derailed south of Seattle yesterday was going 80 mph on a stretch of track with a speed limit of 30, according to investigators. At least three people are dead and many more injured after the train jumped the tracks yesterday morning near Tacoma, Wash., plunging onto the I-5 freeway just before crossing a bridge.

The high-speed train was making its maiden run from Seattle to Portland. All 12 of the train’s passenger cars and one of its two locomotives jumped the tracks. Some of them ended up on the highway resulting in collisions with five cars and two tractor trailers. One train car was dangling nearly vertical. No one on the road was killed.

The train carried 77 passengers and seven crew. Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life, air chisels, and power saws to get people out of the crushed railroad cars.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

The Trump Brand: In an often self-congratulatory speech on foreign policy yesterday, President Trump barely mentioned Russia as one of his perceived threats to the US.

He said Russia and China “seek to challenge American influence, values and wealth,” but he said nothing about Russian efforts to sway the 2016 election. He praised cooperation between US and Russian intelligence to avert a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The President spent plenty of time trashing his predecessors while extolling his own greatness. He said, “Our leaders drifted from American principles.  They lost sight of America’s destiny.  And they lost their belief in American greatness.  As a result, our citizens lost something as well.  The people lost confidence in their government and, eventually, even lost confidence in their future.”

More importantly, and buried in the speech, was Trump’s strategy that comes close to putting America back into a Cold War posture. He said, “This strategy recognizes that, whether we like it or not, we are engaged in a new era of competition.  We accept that vigorous military, economic, and political contests are now playing out all around the world.”

He listed his priorities as homeland security, defeating Islamic terrorism, promoting American prosperity, and maintaining “peace through strength.” He said, “With the strategy I am announcing today, we are declaring that America is in the game and America is going to win.”

Veto: The US yesterday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called on all countries to refrain from building embassies in Jerusalem. The resolution was in response to President Trump’s declaration that the US recognizes Jersualem as the capital of Israel and that the he will move the embassy there.

Flunked Out: President Trump’s federal court nominee Matthew Petersen has withdrawn from consideration after a blistering Senate hearing revealed he knew nothing about trial law or being a judge.

The Obit Page: Nightclub singer Keely Smith, who broke free of her husband Louis Prima to become a great solo act, has died at age 89.

Smith was just 15 when she joined Prima’s band and married him five years later after he divorced his third wife. He was 20 years older.

Together they won the first Grammy Award for best performance by a vocal group for their 1958 recording of “That Old Black Magic.”

Other big hits were “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

Prima was a bit of a ham who stole the show. When Smith gained notoriety of her own with her beautiful voice, the marriage soured and they divorced. He told her she’d be nothing without him, but she turned out to be quite something.

Northern Exposure: The son of former Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was arrested in her home Saturday night after he was accused of breaking in and assaulting his father, Todd.

Track Palin, 28, was reported to have broken a window to get in. His mother told the cops Track was “freaking out and was on some type of medication.” When the police encountered Todd Palin, he was bleeding from the face and head.

Track Palin told the police his father had pointed a gun at him. He said he disarmed his father and beat him. Todd Palin told them he had decided not to shoot his son.

After all, these are people with strong family values.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
