Taliban Attack Parliament, Swift Kick

World: A Taliban attack on the Afghan Parliament began today with a car bomb outside the building and evolved into a prolonged firefight. Police say all six Taliban gunmen were killed and about a dozen civilians injured. The attack was planned to embarrass the government during a vote on a new defense minister. The Taliban tweeted, “‘Parliament of the puppet administration of Kabul is under heavy martyrdom-seekers attack at a time which they were casting confidence vote for the minister of defense.”

Drachma Drama: The Greek government this morning submitted proposals to solve its debt crisis just as the European Union was about to convene an emergency meeting. Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said, “I think this is time for a substantial and viable solution that would allow Greece to come back to growth within the Eurozone.” Fearing a financial collapse, Greeks have withdrawn billions of Euros from the banks and the European Central Bank has been infusing cash to keep the teller windows open.

The Supremes: With the Supreme Court session winding down, court watchers are anticipating potentially blockbuster decisions within days on gay marriage and Obamacare. Same sex marriage could become the law of the land and Obamacare may or may not survive.

Lawyers for same sex couples have argued to the court that their clients have a right under the 14th Amendment … equal protection of the law … to be married the same as opposite sex couples. The heavy betting is they’ll win.

Less certain is the fate of the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare. The court is considering a challenge to the federal subsidies provided by a poorly worded clause in the law. If it is struck down, millions of people will lose their healthcare, and Barack Obama will lose the signature accomplishment of his presidency.

White Power Money: Some Republican politicians, including presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, and Rand Paul, are scrambling to return money donated to their campaigns by a white supremacist named Earl Holt III, the president of the Council of Conservative Citizens. Holt’s name appeared in the Internet ramblings of Dylann Roof, the young white supremacist accused in the South Carolina church massacre last week.

Nation: The search for two escaped murderers has shifted again back to far upstate New York to an area west of where the men escaped. The report of a break-in at a seasonal hunting cabin caused searchers to descend on the area. They had been looking 350 miles away near the New York Pennsylvania border.

>After an intensive manhunt, New Orleans police have captured Travis Boys, 33, an escaped prisoner suspected of killing the police officer driving him to jail. Boys had been handcuffed behind his back but police say he managed to get hold of the officer’s gun, shoot him, and get away.

>The body of former White House executive chef Walter Scheib, 61, has been found in the mountains outside Taos, New Mexico. Scheib went missing June 13 after taking a mountain hike alone. He cooked for Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

The Sports Page: Twenty-one year old Jordan Spieth yesterday became only the sixth golfer to win the US Open and the Masters in the same year. Tiger Woods was the last to do it back in 2002.

Protest Song: The diminutive singer Taylor Swift has backed off the giant Apple corporation in a protest over royalties. Swift had announced she’s withholding her latest album from Apple’s new music streaming service because the company wasn’t going to pay royalties during the three-month trial period for new customers. Swift said musicians need to be paid and, “We don’t ask you for free iPhones.” An Apple executive quickly reversed the policy and called Swift to tell her. Maybe she’ll put Apple in a song, like one of her ex boyfriends.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
