Suspects in Nemtsov Hit, Corruption in Jersey

Suspects: Russia’s security police have detained two men from the Caucasus as suspects in the murder of dissident politician Boris Nemtsov. Further details were not given. According to some accounts Nemtsov was shot in the back by a man hiding in a stairway on a bridge within sight of the Kremlin. Another man drove the getaway car.

Joisey: Several news outlets are reporting that New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez is about to be indicted in federal court for official corruption. Investigators believe he accepted gifts and luxury vacations in exchange for favors for a personal friend who’s been a big political supporter. That means money.

Menendez is friends with Dr. Salomon Melgen from Florida, one of the biggest billers of Medicare in the country. Prosecutors have looked into whether Mendez took gifts to influence policy in favor of Melgen making even more money.

Ferguson: A captain and a sergeant in the Ferguson, Mo. police department have resigned over racist emails uncovered in the federal investigation into their force. The city’s chief court clerk also has been fired because of the emails. One of the messages was a photo of bare-chested African women with the caption “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion.”

Union Busters: The Wisconsin legislature has approved a law barring unions from requiring non-member workers to pay the equivalent of dues. This makes Wisconsin the 25th state to have what’s called “right to work laws” and further polishes Gov. Scott Walker’s image as a politician who takes on the power of unions. He’s positioning himself to run for the Republican nomination for president.

Econ 101: The country added 295,000 jobs in February, making steady progress and dropping the unemployment level to 5.5 percent. Some economists think the economy in 2015 might hit 3 percent growth for the first time in ten years.

Permawar: Iraqi forces are reported to have driven Islamic State fighters out of the strategically important western town of al-Baghdadi. They had the aide of American air strikes, but any victory against ISIS is important because they are good at what they do, and determined. The Iraqis with Iranian support are still struggling to re-take the city of Tikrit.

Change at the Channel: As expected in recent days, NBC News is bringing back its former president Andrew Lack to straighten out the operation. The current division chief Patricia Fili-Krushel, who never worked a day of news in her life, is expected to be re-assigned before she disappears altogether.

Insiders complain that Fili and her British lieutenant Deborah Turness led NBC News down the tabloid and entertainment path. The test for Lack will be whether he decides to throw out suspended anchorman Brian Williams with the management trash, or try to rehabilitate him.

The Obit Page: Albert Maysles, who with his brother David made the ground breaking documentaries “Grey Gardens” and “Gimme Shelter,” has died at age 88 in New York. The brothers didn’t interview their subjects, they just blended into the woodwork and filmed. It was revolutionary at the time. “Grey Gardens” was a disturbing portrait of Jackie Kennedy’s derelict cousin and her daughter. “Gimme Shelter,” about the Rolling Stones 1969 tour, famously captured film of a biker gang stabbing to death a man at a concert in Altamont, Calif.

Doublespeak: CIA director John Brennan announced he is reorganizing his agency and re-assigning thousands of spies and bureaucrats into newly created departments and divisions to fight modern threats to America. He’s creating 10 new “mission centers” dedicated to such things as terrorism, weapons proliferation, digital threats, and the Middle East.

Brennan is creating a new “Talent Development Center of Excellence” and, in a bold stroke, the National Clandestine Service will be given back its original name, the Directorate of Operations. Enemies be afraid. Be very afraid.

Star Tracks: The “Artist Formerly Known as Prince,” known once again as Prince, has announced that he’s doing an American tour starting March 14th. He’ll be billed as “Prince.”

>In apparently coincidental fashion choices, celebutante Kim Kardashian and actor Jared Leto have bleached their hair platinum blonde. Now they both look like Draco Malfoy.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
