Shooter Goes to Jury, The Pentaquark

Nation: A Colorado jury is set to begin deliberating today in the case of movie theater shooter James Holmes. They have to decide whether Holmes was sane when he murdered 12 movie patrons, and if so, whether he should be executed. Despite Holmes’s clear indications of mental illness, prosecutor George Brauchler said, “That guy was sane beyond a reasonable doubt and he needs to be held accountable for what he did.”

The Greek Thing: The International Monetary Fund, which is owed billions of dollars by Greece, has attacked the latest bailout plan saying that unless the euro zone writes off part of the Greek debt, the country’s liabilities will become unsustainable. The IMF says its analysis finds that Greek debt is approaching 200% of the gross national income over the next two years, which it says Greece just can’t handle.

The Greek parliament today was taking up emergency financial reforms to appease the European Union.

The IMF is echoing the opinions of some economists who have said a bailout without reducing the amount of the national debt will only make things worse.

NukeDeal: The NY Times points out today that the Iran nuclear deal is an historical example of President Obama’s belief that you have to talk to your enemies and negotiate. It’s a test of whether he’s a peacemaker or a sap.

Republican presidential candidates and even some Democrats were quick yesterday to denounce the deal. Jeb Bush said, “Over time it paves Iran’s path to a bomb.” Scott Walker said, “President Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran will be remembered as one of America’s worst diplomatic failures.”

But California’s Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein described the agreement as an opportunity in a deteriorating situation in the Middle East. She said, “I know we have a lot of geniuses around here, but I would just hope that people would hold their fire.”

World: A former SS sergeant who was a bookkeeper at the notorious Auschwitz death camp has been convicted in a German court of complicity in the murder of 300,000 Hungarian Jews. Oskar Gröning, 94, was sentenced to four years in prison. In his opening statement in April Gröning made a shifty admission of “moral” guilt, but not actual guilt for being a cog in the machinery of death. “It is beyond question that I am morally complicit,” he said. “This moral guilt I acknowledge here, before the victims, with regret and humility.”

Blinded by Science: Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider outside Geneva say they have discovered a new subatomic particle they call a “pentaquark.” Quarks are the particles that make up hadrons, which in turn are the building blocks of protons and neutrons. Previously, hadrons have been found to be made up of four quarks, known as tetraquarks. The pentaquark is four quarks plus one anti-quark. This is the limit of our understanding of this matter.

Et Tu Whoopi?: Comedian Bill Cosby has lost one of his most prominent defenders. Whoopi Goldberg admitted on “The View” that “If this is to be tried in the court of public opinion, I got to say all of the information that’s out there kind of points to guilt.” At least 25 women have accused Cosby of drugging and raping them. Goldberg said, “It looks bad, Bill, either speak up or shut up.”

Ring Revulsion: Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon is back on the air this week after explaining his mysterious two-week absence with a “hand” injury. (Readers with weak stomachs leave the room now.) It turns out Fallon tripped on a rug and fell, catching his wedding ring on the kitchen counter, nearly severing his ring finger. Doctors call it a “ring avulsion.” After six hours in microsurgery and 10 days in the hospital Fallon is joking about it. He said, “I started reading books about the meaning of life.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
