Russia Imposes Sanctions, Ebola Debate

Food Fight: Russia is hitting back at the West with economic sanctions of its own, banning the importation of all American food and European produce. It will hurt Western farmers, suppliers, and food companies, but it cuts both ways. Russia imports about 25 percent of its food and imports are often cheaper than homegrown Russian food.

Ebola: Two American medical aid workers being treated for the virus at Emory University Hospital have been given an experimental serum, sparking a debate about whether everyone infected should get the same. With 932 people already reported dead in West Africa, the Ebola epidemic appears to be gaining strength, as 20 percent of all the cases were reported within the past week. The World Health Organization said on its website that despite pressure to issue the serum, use of it on the two Americans “has raised questions about whether medicine that has never been tested and shown to be safe in people should be used in the outbreak.”

Justice Delayed: A Cambodian court found two senior leaders of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced them to life in prison. The Khmer Rouge killed 1.7 million Cambodians between 1975 and 1979 in an effort to make the country a simple worker’s collective in which money did not exist and higher education was banned. Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge leader, died in a jungle refuge in 1998 without ever being brought to justice.

Bladerunner: In closing arguments the chief prosecutor in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial described the defendant as a “deceitful witness” who told the court a “snowball of lies”. Pistorius says he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her through the bathroom door. But prosecutor Gerrie Nel said the court “should have no difficulty in rejecting” the Pistorius version of events because it is “devoid of any truth”.

Afghanistan: Attacks engineered in cooperation with police officers working with the Taliban led to the deaths of 11 police officers yesterday. In one incident a terrorist cop poisoned five fellow officers then brought in the Taliban to shoot them. In another attack an officer left with the Taliban after they killed a guard and executed five sleeping officers.

Stranger in Paradise: Hurricane Iselle, a category 1, is on track to make a direct hit on the Hawaiian Islands within hours. A second storm, category 2 Hurricane Julio, is close on its trail.

Condom Minimum: Los Angeles has been losing jobs for years to what’s known as “runaway production,” television and movie productions that have gone out of state or out of the country where it’s cheaper to shoot. Now LA is losing one of the most reliable and prolific segments of the movie business, porn. Porn production dropped about 90 percent after LA County passed a law requiring performers to use condoms. Porn producers say raincoats aren’t sexy.

Trumped: Donald Trump is suing two dying Atlantic City casinos to remove his name because he no longer owns or operates them. The Donald says the seedy Trump Plaza and Trump Taj Mahal make him look bad. Once he gets the names removed it will be only his hair that makes him look bad.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
