Race Matters, Einstein Was Right

It’s Political: Hillary Clinton went straight for the minority vote in last night’s debate with Bernie Sanders in Milwaukee. She said, “I want to tackle those barriers that stand in the way of too many Americans right now. African-Americans who face discrimination in the job market, education, housing, and the criminal justice system.” The black vote is critical in the upcoming South Carolina primary.

Later in the debate Sanders said, “The reality is four times as many blacks get arrested for marijuana. Truth is that far more blacks get stopped for traffic violations. The truth is that sentencing for blacks is higher than for whites.” He went on, “We need fundamental police reform, clearly, clearly, when we talk about a criminal justice system.

Clinton and Sanders clashed over healthcare with Clinton repeating her charge that Sanders’ plan for universal healthcare would increase the size of government by 40 percent. She said, “We should level with the American people about what we can do to make sure they get quality affordable healthcare.”

Sanders retorted, “There is one major country — the United States — which ends up spending almost three times per capita what they do in the U.K. guaranteeing health care to all people, 50 percent more than they do in France guaranteeing health care to all people, far more than our Canadian neighbors, who guarantee health care to all people.”

Gravity: A team of physicists using giant antennae say they have recorded the sound of two black holes colliding in outer space a billion years ago, giving proof to Albert Einstein’s prediction that “gravitational waves” exist. Black holes have so much gravitational pull that even light waves cannot escape.

It could be one of the most important discoveries in the study of the universe.

Scientists compare what they observed to a storm so powerful that it bent space, speeded up time, and slowed it again. The physical manifestation of the disturbance in the universe is gravitational waves, a key part of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in which both time and space are flexible.

Patriot Games: The last four holdouts at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon surrendered yesterday, but not without some final drama. Three occupants gave up but then the last holdout, David Fry, 27, announced he wouldn’t leave. Over a live telephone feed available on the Internet, Fry told negotiators, “I’m actually feeling suicidal right now. It’s liberty or death. I will not go another day as a slave to this system.”

Fry’s list of complaints included the use of taxpayer money for abortions, drone strikes in Pakistan, the concealment of UFOs, and the inability to get medical marijuana in his home state of Ohio. He said, “I declare war against the federal government. I’ve peacefully voted and nothing is ever done.” After about an hour of that, he abruptly gave up.

The Hermit Kingdom: In mounting tensions, North Korea has ordered all southern workers out of the industrial park run with the south and cut the communication hotlines between the two countries. The north also says it is seizing southern assets in the park six miles north of the border.

The South in turn cut off water and power to the industrial park.

Both the US and South Korea have denounced the North for recent nuclear and missile tests. During a similar head knocking in 2013 the industrial park was closed, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in business losses.

Nation: The massive natural gas leak outside Los Angeles that forced the evacuation of 6,400 families has been plugged. The six-week leak could cost SoCalGas $250 million even before it compensates the evacuated families.

World: The US and Russia have reached a joint agreement to a ceasefire in Syria and an effort to bring humanitarian relief to embattled cities.

>A riot and fire at a prison in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey yesterday resulted in the deaths of at least 49 inmates. The incident started with a fight between just two inmates and escalated to the point that inmates set fire to the prison warehouse.

Who Wore it Best: Caitlyn and Kendall Jenner wore the same white knit dress with rips in it to the Kanye West fashion show.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
