Quebec Mosque Massacre, Protests Continue

Mosque Massacre: Six people were killed in an attack during evening prayers at a mosque in Quebec last night in what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called a “terrorist attack on Muslims.” Eight others were wounded and two suspects were arrested. Mass shootings are uncommon in Canada.

The attack came after Trudeau promised to keep accepting Muslim refugees in the wake of President Trump’s immigration order.

Give Us Your Tired: Large demonstrations against Trump’s order continued yesterday in New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, and a long list of other locations as immigration lawyers set up shop in airports.

In a partial reversal of Trump’s order barring entry of people from seven Muslim countries, the White House announced yesterday that people who hold green cards granting them legal US residency will be allowed back into the country.

The President’s order gives preference to Christians entering the US from troubled countries. Trump tweeted yesterday, “Christians in the Middle-East have been executed in large numbers. We cannot allow this horror to continue!” He did not acknowledge that while it’s true that Christians have been persecuted, the vast majority of the dead in the Middle East wars are Muslim.

Trump said in a Facebook post, “America has always been the land of the free and home of the brave. We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say.”

No terrorists from trump’s seven listed countries have killed American citizens since the 9/11 attacks, but Saudi Arabia, which had 16 of its citizens among the 19 hijackers, is not on the list.

The Law: Trump’s immigration order hangs its hat on a clause in the law that says, “Whenever the president finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”

Immigration lawyers say that is in conflict with a separate clause in US law that bars discrimination “in the issuance of an immigrant visa because of the person’s race, sex, nationality, place of birth or place of residence.”

Elephant Sense: Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham issued a blistering statement yesterday saying, “It is clear from the confusion at our airports across the nation that President Trump’s executive order was not properly vetted. We are particularly concerned by reports that this order went into effect with little to no consultation with the Departments of State, Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security.”

They said, “Ultimately, we fear this executive order will become a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism.”

Never one to say “You’re right and I’m wrong,” Trump tweeted, “The joint statement of former presidential candidates John McCain & Lindsey Graham is wrong – they are sadly weak on immigration. The two… …Senators should focus their energies on ISIS, illegal immigration and border security instead of always looking to start World War III.”

Oh, so now we know that those two guys are always looking to start World War III.

Permawar: In the first counter-terrorism raid under the Trump Administration, a member of Seal Team 6 was killed and three others wounded in a fierce firefight at an al Qaeda training center in Yemen.

The Pentagon says 14 Qaeda fighters were killed in the raid led to “the capture of information that will likely provide insight into the planning of future terror plots.”

During the operation an MV-22 Osprey vertical takeoff aircraft that was to have been used to remove the US commandos crash landed and had to be destroyed.

Silence: Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway yesterday on Fox News called for the firing of reporters and pundits who didn’t see the election of Donald Trump coming. “Not one network person has been let go. Not one silly political analyst and pundit who talked smack all day long about Donald Trump has been let go.”

There’s a potential deal to be made here. The press can fire its liars if the White House fires theirs.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
