Putin Approves Missiles, The Rubio Future

Missile Alert: Vladimir Putin has made the nuclear equation more difficult by approving the shipment of advanced anti-aircraft missiles to Iran. Putin appears to have reneged on an agreement with President Obama not to sell the missiles to Iran. If no deal is reached to limit Iran’s nuclear development, and those missiles are installed, conventional airstrikes would be more difficult or nearly impossible to carry out.

Yesterday and Today: Casting himself as the child of immigrants and the American Dream, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio yesterday delivered his official declaration for president at Miami’s Freedom Tower saying, “I believe our very identity as an exceptional nation is at stake, and I can make a difference as president.”

Although he first has to jump the hurdle of the Republican primaries, Rubio is already campaigning against Hillary Clinton. On a conference call with donors, Rubio said, “Just yesterday, we heard from a leader from yesterday who wants to take us back to yesterday, but I feel that this country has always been about tomorrow.”

The Black T-Shirts: Four former triggermen for the Blackwater security company in Iraq have been sentenced to long prison terms for a 2007 Baghdad shooting melee that left 14 Iraqi civilians dead and17 wounded. US District Judge Royce Lamberth rejected a defense plea for lesser sentences and said he would stick to the book. One of the men got life in prison and the others 30 years each.

In the early days of the US occupation armed private security contractors had free reign, sometimes even taking part in firefights in support of US troops. The Baghdad incident marked the end of the cowboy days. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Martin said, “These four men have refused to accept virtually any responsibility for their crimes and the blood they shed that day.”

Charged: Contrary to word from their own sheriff’s department, Tulsa prosecutors have filed manslaughter charges against reserve Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Bates in the killing of an unarmed suspect. Bates had said he pulled his gun and fired, thinking it was his Taser.

Bates, 73, is a big political donor to the sheriff.

Video of the incident also recorded the voices of other deputies berating the suspect Eric Harris as he lay dying, saying he couldn’t breathe. One deputy barked, “Fuck your breath.”

Woman in Chains: An Arizona judge sentenced tabloid killer Jodi Arias to life in prison without hope for parole in the 2008 murder of her on-again-off-again boyfriend Travis Alexander. The case about sex, obsession, and death fed television and print tabloids for years. Arias said, “I’m truly disgusted and I’m repulsed with myself.”

Baggage Delay: An Alaska Airlines flight out of Seattle yesterday had to make a quick turn around after kicking and screaming were heard from the cargo hold. A baggage handler had fallen asleep on the job.

Dynasty: While presidential candidate Hillary Clinton yesterday lunched at Chipotle in Maumee, Ohio like an “every day” American, her 35-year-old daughter Chelsea was gracing the cover of Elle magazine in a $1,500 Gucci dress and a $7,000 Cartier bracelet. The younger Clinton and her hedge fund husband live in a $9.5 million New York condo. Good for them, but as Politico reports, Chelsea is shaping up to be consigliere to her mother’s attempt to appeal to those “every day” Americans who were not born on third rounding for home.

Kenneth Vogel writes, “Friends and associates of the Clintons in recent weeks made clear that this once and possibly future daughter of a president is poised to become a major figure in the campaign and—if her mother makes it there—at the White House.” Just like every day people.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
