Plan to Hit ISIS, China Stocks Plunge

Permawar: The US, Turkey, and Syrian rebels plan military action to clear Islamic State fighters out of a 60-mile strip of Syria along Turkey’s southern border. The area would be established as a safe zone for Syrians escaping their country’s civil war. The US is expected to contribute mostly air power, but it would be a big escalation of military involvement in Syria for both the US and Turkey.

A potential complication is what happens if Syrian aircraft attack the ground fighters allied with the US and Turkey. Fighting Syria isn’t part of the plan.

World: After taking a breather, China’s stocks today continued their plunge. The Shanghai share index dropped 8.5 percent, its steepest dive in eight years. About two thirds of the stocks stopped trading after they fell by the daily limit of 10 percent. It’s a dangerous situation for China. Their stocks are still up by 70 percent from a year ago, but there was a frenzy of borrowing to buy into a rising market.

Off Road: The federal government is expected today to announce a record $105 million fine levied on Fiat Chrysler for violating the law regarding safety recalls. The issue involves 1.56 million older model Jeeps with the gas tank behind the rear axle, making it vulnerable to puncture and fire in a rear-end collision. The company failed to give the car owners proper notice and to come up a fix, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wheels: British cyclist Chris Froome rode to his second Tour de France win in three years, finishing the race in Paris yesterday afternoon. With only about six miles to go Froome ran over a plastic water bottle and had to stop to pull a paper bag out of his gears. Both were hazards that could have knocked him down and out of the race.

The Cosby Cover: The cover of the July 27 issue of New York Magazine features pictures of 35 women who say they were sexually assaulted by comedian Bill Cosby. Inside, each of the women tells her story. Sammie Mays, 57, a former Cosby Show writer, says, “Bill Cosby, that encounter, that one time, played a major factor in the direction my life took, toward the dark side.”

The Obit Page: Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only child of pop stars Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, has died at age 22 after being in a coma since Jan. 31. Back in January, Brown was found unconscious in a bathtub, very much like her mother who was found dead in a tub at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 2012. Brown was the only heir to her mother’s estate, estimated at $20 million.

Sticks and Stones:

Republican candidate Mike Huckabee to Breitbart News: “This president’s foreign policy is the most feckless in American history. It is so naive that he would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven.”

-Rick Perry to CNN on guns in movie theaters: “I would suggest to you that these concepts of gun-free zones are a bad idea.”

-Lindsey Graham to CNN about Donald Trump: “He’s becoming a jackass at a time when we need to have a serious debate about the future of the party and the country.”

-Donald Trump to The Hill: “The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy.”

-President Obama: “In eighteen months I’m turning over the keys. I want to make sure I’m turning the keys over to somebody who’s serious about the serious problems the country faces and the world faces.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
