Pistorius Gets a Slap, Airbag Recall

Bladerunner: Amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. His lawyer said he expected Pistorius to spend only 10 months behind bars with the rest of his time served under house arrest. Pistorius, who has at times been very emotional during the trial, showed little reaction.

Sound Recall: Toyota is recalling 247,000 cars in the US because their air bags can explode, showering the passenger compartment with deadly shrapnel. At least three people have been killed. The airbags, made by a company called Takata, have been installed in more that two million cars around the world.

Permawar: A new round of ISIS attacks has targeted the Mosul dam in Iraq, the loss of which would be disastrous for Iraq. The Kurdish fighters known as Peshmerga claim they repulsed the assaults.

The viciousness of ISIS is pointed out by an article in the Washington Post, which reports that back in August the Islamic militants slaughtered 700 people in an eastern Syrian town that resisted their occupation. The paper says that “Over a three-day period, vengeful fighters shelled, beheaded, crucified and shot hundreds of members of the Shaitat tribe after they dared to rise up against the extremists.”

And in a reversal that also indicates the seriousness of the fight with ISIS, Turkey says it will allow Peshmerga from Iraq to cross through Turkish territory to fight the Islamic State militants in Syria. This is a big move for Turkey, which has previously refused to help the Kurds in Kobane, Syria because they are aligned with the PKK, the Kurdish Worker’s Party that’s been fighting the Turkish government for 30 years.

Outbreak: Nigeria was declared “Ebola free” yesterday by the World Health Organization while cases are spiking in Guinea. Nigeria is credited with cracking down on Ebola by conducting emergency medical training and performing vigorous contact tracing to limit the spread of the disease. Nigeria has had just 19 cases with seven deaths, proving, the WHO says, that Ebola can be contained. Guinea, on the other hand has had 1,472 cases with 843 deaths, bringing the total of Ebola deaths in West Africa to 4,555.

Nation: A strangling in a Motel 6 in Hammond, Ind. has led police to the bodies of six more women. Police say a man named Darren Vann, 43, admitted the murder of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy and told them where they could find the remains of other women stashed in vacant houses in Gary, Ind. The cops say Vann told them he’s been killing people for 20 years

The Obit Page: Oscar de la Renta, the fashion designer who dressed the rich, famous, beautiful, and fashionable for more than 50 years, died at home in Connecticut at age 82. Although ill with cancer, he doubled his business in the last 10 years. Women who’ve worn de la Renta: Jackie Kennedy, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nancy Reagan and Michelle Obama. Most recently de la Renta designed the ivory dress that Amal Alamuddin wore for her marriage to George Clooney.

A Night at the Opera: Protesters, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, gathered outside the Metropolitan Opera last night to shout down the opening of the opera “The Death of Klinghoffer.” One man interrupted the show. Critics of the play about the 1985 Palestinian terrorist murder of the wheelchair-bound American say it glorifies terrorism. The Protesters shouted “Terrorism is not art.” Klinghoffer was shot and thrown overboard during the hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship.

The Boys of Late October: The World Series opens tonight with the San Francisco Giants at the Kansas City Royals. The Royals have not been in the series since 1985. The weather tonight: 50 degrees and mostly clear with barbeque and a chance of rain.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
