Oregon Siege Continues, Trump OutFoxes

Patriot Games: A day after one of the occupiers was killed at a traffic stop, the Oregon wildlife preserve taken by a “patriot” group is surrounded by state and federal law enforcement. Their arrested leader, Ammon Bundy, issued a statement saying they should give up. Eight left the compound yesterday and three were arrested. More remain inside.

Authorities had been allowing the occupiers to come and go. They had been attending community meetings speaking about their cause and were on their way to one of those meetings when they were the target of a well-planned traffic stop that ended in shooting.

Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward said, “Multiple law enforcement agencies put a lot of work putting together the best tactical plan they could to take these guys down peacefully.”

The man who was killed, LaVoy Finicum, 55, had told the Associated Press earlier this month, “This is where I’m going to breathe my last breath, whether I’m 90, 95 or 55. I’m going to not spend my days in a cell.”

Wounded Charity: The Wounded Warrior Project, which has become a fundraising juggernaut for injured veterans, has been accused of wasting money on lavish fundraising and entertainment while spending drastically less money on veterans than other organizations.

According to public records examined by “Charity Navigator,” The Wounded Warrior Project, which raised $372 million last year, spends 60 percent of its money on veterans. By comparison, Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust spends 96 percent and Fisher House, 91 percent.

CBS news says it spoke to 40 former employees who say spending is out of control. Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette, who used to work as a speaker for the Project, said, “You’re using our injuries, our darkest days, our hardships, to make money. So you can have these big parties.”

I’m With Stupid: Phoenix Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who bills himself as “America’s toughest sheriff,” has endorsed Donald Trump for president.

Trump is sticking to his pledge to dodge tonight’s Republican debate because he doesn’t like Fox host Megyn Kelly. Trump appeared last night — on Fox — with Bill O’Reilly, who practically begged Trump to appear in the debate. But Trump is planning a counter event to raise money for veterans. This, from a guy who denounced Sen. John McCain for being shot down and captured in Vietnam.

Rival Ted Cruz told a gathering, “Apparently Megyn Kelly is really, really scary. Donald is a fragile soul.”

Image Control: Corbis photography, an archive of news and culturally important photos from Marilyn Monroe to Jimi Hendrix and Albert Einstein, has been sold to a Chinese company. Corbis also owns rights to some of the iconic photos from the 1989 Tien an Men uprising, including the man standing in front of a row of tanks — pictures the Chinese government has long tried to suppress. The company buying the archive said those pictures will be available everywhere except China.

Police Beat: The widow of disgraced Fox Lake, Ill. Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz has been indicted on charges related to her husband’s pilfering on the job. Melodie Gliniewicz, 51, was indicted for felony misuse of charitable funds and money-laundering. Her husband, originally thought to have been killed chasing suspects last September, was later revealed to have committed suicide shortly before he would have been revealed as a crook.

Following Orders: Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann, who orchestrated the murder of millions of people in World War II, wrote a letter pleading for his life just two days before he was hanged. The letter has been revealed for the first time. Although Eichmann was the chief architect of the Holocaust, he wrote, “I was not a responsible leader, and as such do not feel myself guilty.”

Controversy of the Week: Tongues are flapping after the casting of British actor Joseph Fiennes to play the late Michal Jackson in a British television movie. Fiennes played the young William Shakespeare in “Shakespeare in Love.” It’s a casting conundrum; how to portray a once-dark-skinned man who turned more white than black. The bigger question, can Shakespeare sing and moonwalk?

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
