Nobel to Bob Dylan, Trump “Like an Octopus”

Like a Rolling Stone: The Nobel Prize for literature has been awarded to the enigmatic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, who in the 1960s was considered the voice of his generation. The Nobel citation says the award is “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

His songs “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin” became anthems of the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era. The lyrics to “Like a Rolling Stone” haunted a restless generation.

“How does it feel, how does it feel?/To be without a home/Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone”

Dylan, by the way, hated being called “the voice of his generation.”

Permawar: A US warship in the Red Sea has fired cruise missiles to flatten three coastal radar sites controlled by Houthi rebels. The Houthi have been firing missiles at a US destroyer in recent days, causing no harm, but provoking today’s response.

E Minus 26: If the election were held today, Hillary Clinton would win 341 electoral college votes to Donald Trump’s 197, The Washington Post’s  “The Fix” estimates based on polls. It takes 270 to win.

Significantly, all the recent polls have Hillary Clinton winning Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes. If Clinton does win Pennsylvania, Trump has to practically sweep the board of toss-up states to survive.

The FiveThiryEight blog gives Clinton an 86.9 percent chance of winning against 13.1 percent for Trump.

Denial: After Trump denied during Monday night’s debate that he ever behaved with women the way he said he did on an 11-year-old Access Hollywood video, two women have come forward to say, “yes, he did.”

Jessica Leeds, 74, told the NY Times that more than 30 years ago she was seated next to Trump on an airplane and that he touched her breasts and tried to put his hand up her skirt. “He was like an octopus,” she told the paper. “His hands were everywhere.”

Rachel Crooks said she was a 22-year-old receptionist when Trump cornered her in an elevator and kissed her directly on the mouth.

The reporter who wrote the story told NPR that Trump denied both stories and called her a disgusting human being.

Reporters have also spoken to Tasha Dixon, who in 2001 was Miss Arizona competing in the Miss USA pageant, which was owned by Trump. She said Trump just walked right into the changing room, where some of the contestants were as young as 15.  “He just came strolling right in,” Dixon said. “There was no second to put a robe on or any sort of clothing or anything. Some girls were topless. Other girls were naked.”

One contestant recalled that Trump said, “Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before.”

Out the Door: Wells Fargo boss John Stumpf announced he has resigned after revelations that thousands of bank employees created millions of phony accounts to pump up sales numbers. Stumpf tried to hang on, but the bank paid $185 million in fines for a scam that some employees say goes back as 11 years. It happened on his watch.

Political Ri’sotto: Donald Trump angrily tweeted, “Very little pick-up by the dishonest media of incredible information provided by WikiLeaks. So dishonest! Rigged system!”

But that’s not true. The latest leak of emails from the Clinton campaign reveals that campaign boss John Podesta gives cooking advice as well as political. In response to a friend who asked why you can’t add all the liquid to risotto at the same time, Podesta replied, “The slower add process and stirring causes the rice to give up it’s starch which gives the risotto it’s creamy consistency.” Podesta is right about risotto, but the Clinton campaign has the wrong position on apostrophe placement.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
