Meeting a Moderate, Trump Wants Apology

In Transition: Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney spent 90 minutes with Donald Trump yesterday at his Trump National Golf Course in New Jersey. Romney is believed to be considered for Secretary of State, but there was no announcement on whether he was offered the job or would take it.

Romney had been Trump’s bluntest Republican critic, but as he left the meeting he said blandly, “We had a far-reaching conversation with regard to the various theaters of the world with interest to the United States of real significance. We discussed those areas and exchanged our views on those topics.”

It’s unknown whether Trump’s meeting with Romney is a sincere effort to make peace and possibly add moderate cabinet members. The NY Times condemned Trump’s choice of Jeff Sessions for Attorney general, saying in an editorial that his record reveals “a pattern of dogged animus to civil rights and the progress of black Americans and immigrants.”

Break a Leg: Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who was booed by the audience, got a little extra for his money at Friday night’s performance of Hamilton on Broadway, and Donald Trump, the-insulter-in-chief, says the cast owes Pence an apology.

With the full cast on the stage and Pence about to head for the exit, actor Brandon Dixon addressed Pence saying, “We, sir, we are the diverse America, who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”

Trump, who has failed to fully acknowledge the rash of hate crimes committed in his name since the election, tweeted last night that it was “very rude and insulting” to Pence.

He was still obsessed with it this morning. “The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologize to Mike Pence for their terrible behavior”

Nation: The grandson of longtime Chicago Rep. Danny Davis was killed Friday nit in what police say was an argument over basketball shoes. Javon Wilson, 15, was shot in the head at his home. Two juveniles are in custody.

Davis told the Chicago Tribune, “He was a typical 15-year-old. He liked basketball. If you listened to him he was a basketball star, but he liked basketball and music.”

World: A passenger train derailed today in Northern India, killing as many as 100 people, and injuring 200 more. Passenger cars were crushed and ripped apart. The train on one of the world’s busiest railways was carrying 500 people.

Power Outage: Donations to the Clinton Foundation took at 37 percent dive in 2015 as Hillary Clinton’s began to run for president and the foundation’s operations came under scrutiny.  Donations fell to $108 million, down from $172 million in 2014, according to the group’s latest tax filings.

During the campaign Clinton was accused of “pay-for-play” while she was Secretary of State, taking donations for the foundation in exchange for favorable treatment. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah republican who heads the House Oversight Committee, has suggested that he will keep pushing an investigation into the foundation.

Social Notes: The gossips say singer Marc Anthony is splitting with his wife Shannon de Lima because he’s rekindling a romance with his ex, Jennifer Lopez. Only one question about this. When’s the last time Marc Anthony had a hit?

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
