McCain Brain Tumor, Trump v. Sessions

McCain: Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was elected to his sixth term in office last November, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor after undergoing surgery on a blood clot above his left eye.

A statement from the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix says that the blood clot led to the discovery of the brain tumor, a glioblastoma that is one of the most dangerous forms of brain cancer. Survival is usually less than 18 months.

It may explain McCain’s evident confusion as he asked questions of former FBI Director James Comey in a Senate hearing.

McCain’s absence from the Senate weakens the chances of getting the Republican health care bill passed.

The 80-year old senator, who as a navy pilot was held prisoner in North Vietnam for six years, was the 2008 Republican candidate for president.

The Zombie Bill: President Trump at a lunch meeting yesterday urged Republican senators to take up the all-but-dead healthcare bill once again. He taunted, “Any senator who votes against starting debate is really telling America that you’re fine with Obamacare.”

Trump said he doesn’t want Congress to leave town for summer break until a bill is on his desk.

The bill pretty much died Tuesday for lack of votes. Trump alluded to some Republican senators who came out against the measure Monday night, describing them as, “My friends — they really were and are. They might not be very much longer, but that’s O.K.”

Trump complained that the Republicans failed to sell the bill to the voting public, but he didn’t sell it either.

Leaders plan a vote next week to repeal portions of Obamacare without a replacement. The Congressional Budget office announced that the measure would increase the number of people without health coverage by 17 million next year and 32 million by 2020.

Regrets: Trump told three NY Times reporters in an interview that he never would have appointed Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General if he had known that the former senator would recuse himself from the Russia investigation. “Sessions should have never recused himself, and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Trump said, according to the paper.

Trump also attacked former FBI Director James Comey, who he said tried to leverage compromising material about the President to keep his job, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who he accused of hiring a staff loaded with conflicts of interest.

Trump said he is not under investigation, despite the possibility that he obstructed justice by firing Comey. “I don’t think we’re under investigation,” he said. “I’m not under investigation. For what? I didn’t do anything wrong.”

The Granma Ruling: The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the Trump administration may continue to enforce most of its travel and immigration ban while waiting for the case to be heard. But the court agreed with the ruling of a lower court that grandparents and other relatives from the Muslim countries listed in the ban must be allowed to visit in the US.

Fashion News: Police in Saudi Arabia have released a young woman arrested after she appeared on Instagram wearing a mini-skirt and crop top. She wasn’t charged with a crime.

The Juice: Former football great OJ Simpson has his parole hearing today, hoping to get out of prison after serving nine years in prison for armed robbery. He’s been a trouble-sfree prisoner.

One of the victims, the only one still alive, says he plans to testify on Simpson’s behalf. Simpson got 9 to 33 years for an armed robbery in which he attempted to take back sports memorabilia he said had been stolen from him. Memorabilia dealer Bruce Fromong said, “I never thought that the crime deserved that much time, that long of a sentence.”

If OJ gets out maybe he can finally fulfill his promise to find out who killed Nicole.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
