Manning Guilty, Housing Up, Weiner “Rolls”

National: Pfc. Bradley Manning was acquitted of the most serious charges of aiding the enemy when he gave 700,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks, but he still faces a long time in prison. He was convicted of 19 of 21 charges, including espionage and stealing government property. The penalties for his convictions total 136 years, but rarely are sentences assigned consecutively. The defense was pleased with the result because aiding the enemy carries a life sentence.

  • The former president of Penn State University and two administrators have been ordered to stand trial on charges that they tried to cover up the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. Arguing in favor of sending the three to trial, the prosecutor said they had engaged in a “conspiracy of silence.”

Buy Now: Home prices are rising in some cities at a pace not seen since the housing bubble. In the month of May prices were up from the previous year more than 20% in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Atlanta. Low mortgage rates and heavy demand are pushing prices.

World: The driver of the Spanish train that crashed killing 79 people was on the telephone and looking at documents when he hit a curve at twice the speed limit, according to a Spanish court. Sixty-six people are still in the hospital, 15 of them in critical condition.

Drink Up: A NY appeals court has unanimously upheld the ruling that threw out Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on big sugary drinks like 48 oz. sodas and slushies. Bloomberg was trying to trim the waistlines of New Yorkers as a matter of public health, but the courts have essentially ruled that people can have a Big Gulp and be as fat as they want to be.

The Obit Page: Former US Sen. Harry F. Byrd, Jr. of Virginia has died at age 98. He was first elected in 1966 to replace his father and ended up serving 17 years. Byrd originally was a segregationist Democrat who became an independent. He preached fiscal restraint and retired disappointed that Congress could not control its spending.

  • Actress Eileen Brennan, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the comedy film “Private Benjamin”, has died of cancer at age 80. In addition to a string of television roles, she was also in “The Last Picture Show” in 1971 and “The Sting” with Paul Newman in in 1973.

Quit isn’t the way we roll in New York City.Honestly, we were shocked to learn that a man who wears a blue button down Oxford shirt thinks he “rolls”.
