LAPD Shooting Goes Viral, Company Floored

Video: A video showing Los Angeles police officers struggling with a homeless man before shooting him to death yesterday has gone viral. It had millions of views within hours of being posted on Facebook.

Officers had been responding to a report of a robbery in LA’s skid row. The video begins with officers struggling with the man and taking him to the ground. Officers can be heard saying something like “drop the gun” before five rapid gunshots are heard.

“It’s clear there was a struggle for the officer’s gun,” LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. Two officers and a sergeant fired their guns, according to the police.

Floored: Trading in shares of Lumber Liquidators was halted today after the company’s stock dropped 20 percent following a “60 Minutes” report that the company’s Chinese-made laminate flooring contains dangerous and illegal amounts of formaldehyde. The company is a national chain of flooring stores. CBS reported that some samples of flooring they bought contained thirteen times the limit of formaldehyde.

Diplospeak: US officials and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are trying to defuse the tension before he speaks to Congress tomorrow. Netanyahu said in a speech this morning to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee that, “I have a moral obligation to speak up in the face of these dangers while there is still time to avert them.” Netanyahu is afraid that US nuclear negotiations with Iran will leave that country with the ability to make nuclear weapons.

Speaking to the same crowd, UN Ambassador Samantha Power said, “The United States of America will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Period.”

Permawar: Iraqi forces along with Shiite militia have launched a major operation to take back the city of Tikrit from Islamic State occupiers. It’s a full assault by 30,000 troops under the support of artillery and air strikes, but so far the ISIS fighters are putting up stiff resistance.

Third Notice: Ukraine is in danger of having its natural gas supply cut off by Russia tomorrow if the impoverished government doesn’t make a big payment on its bill. Ukraine paid $15 million on Friday, just about enough for one day’s worth of gas. Ukraine is in the strange position of being dependent on Russia for natural gas even while it’s been fighting Russian soldiers who are backing up rebels in the East. Ukraine is still waiting for a $17.5 billion bailout deal from the International Monetary Fund.

Must Be Spring: North Korea fired two missiles into the sea today in its annual hissy fit over joint military exercises held by US and South Korean troops. The North Koreans vowed “merciless” retaliation and, dammit, this time they really mean it.

The Obit Page: Minnie Minoso, the All Star Cuban outfielder who was one of the most popular players for the Chicago White Sox in the 1950s, has died in Chicago at age 89. He was the big league’s first black Latin player, joining the Sox in 1949, just two years after Jackie Robinson started with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Minoso was considered one of the best players of his time, but he was never voted into the Hall of Fame.

Nation: Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, the longest serving woman in Congress, is announcing her retirement. She’s been a senator since 1987. Before the Senate the 78-year-old Mikulski spent five terms in the House.

Funny Business: A Saturday Night Live skit in which Dakota Johnson plays an American girl whose sentimental and teary-eyed father drops her off to join ISIS has stirred one of those social media controversies. You think she’s leaving for college or to travel but a pickup truck full of gunmen arrives to take her away. She says, “Dad, it’s just ISIS.”

Social media have erupted in outrage that nothing involving ISIS is funny, but let’s get to the real issue. Johnson’s mother, actress Melanie Griffith, was in the audience. Girlfriend, what have you done to your face?

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
