Jet Wreckage Found, Shot Three Times

Missing Jet: Search teams say they have found wreckage and bodies from AirAsia flight 8501 in the Java Sea off the coast of Borneo. Searchers say they can see what appears to be the shape of part of the fuselage resting on the bottom. A few bodies have been recovered, but many more are still in the water. Recovery crews are hampered by winds and high waves.

It’s still unknown what caused the passenger jet to plunge into the sea with 162 people on board. The wreckage was found 60 miles southeast of the plane’s last known position, in the opposite direction from its flight path.

Nation: Protesters hit the streets of Los Angeles again last night after the release of autopsy results from a fatal police shooting last August. The autopsy shows that Los Angeles police fatally shot an unarmed black man three times, including once in the back.

According to the official account, the officers stopped 25-year-old Ezell Ford because he was acting suspiciously. The report says Ford attacked one officer, knocking him to the ground, and was on top of the officer grabbing his gun when the other officer fired twice. The officer on the ground shot Ford in the back with a backup gun, according to the police report.

Ford’s family has sued for wrongful death claiming the police had frequent encounters with him and knew their son was mentally ill.

NuYawk: Mayor Bill de Blasio was booed and heckled at a police graduation ceremony yesterday as his relationship with the cops continues to deteriorate. Some people even turned their backs on the mayor in what’s becoming a standard display of disrespect. Many police officers claim de Blasio has fed an anti-police atmosphere that contributed to the recent murder of two officers on the job.

Speaking to graduating cadets de Blasio said, “You will confront all the problems that plague our society; problems that you didn’t create.”

Then someone shouted from the crowd, “You did!”

Fuel: The price of oil closed yesterday under $57 a barrel, a 5½-year low. Gasbuddy.com says the national average for gasoline is now $2.26.

Airmail: A US airstrike in Somalia targeted a senior leader of the terrorist group al-Shabab, according to the Pentagon. The name of the leader was not released and the results of the strike were still being assessed. Al-Shabab carried out the 2013 massacre at the Westfield shopping mall in Nairobi resulting in 67 deaths.

The Obit Page: Timothy Dowd, the New York detective who led the hunt for the infamous “Son of Sam” killer in 1976 and 77, has died at age 99. The random shootings of couples sitting in parked cars terrorized the kids of the disco age in the borough of Queens. Dowd set out patrols, stakeouts, unmarked cars, and female cops as decoy targets. He even tried to trace 28,000 of the .44 caliber pistols used by the killer. Ultimately the crazed shooter was found through a parking ticket issued near one of the shootings and the killer David Berkowitz is spending life in prison.

Grimm News: Michael Grimm, the only Republican congressional representative from New York City, has announced he will resign Jan. 5 as a result of his plea of guilty to federal tax evasion. Grimm had said he would stay on in Congress until he was taken to the woodshed by Majority Leader John Boehner and explained the facts of politics. Grimm’s most notable accomplishment as a representative was threatening to break a reporter in half and throw him off the House balcony.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
