Israel Hits Missiles, “Super Tunnel” Found

Syria: Israeli jets yesterday hit two Syrian bases to destroy Russian missiles they say were intended for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which is fighting in support of the Syrian regime. Israel has said it will do what’s necessary to keep weapons out of the hands of its longtime enemy.

Weapons inspectors say Syria has destroyed its ability to produce chemical weapons. But Syria has at least 1,290 tons of chemical weapons that still need to be destroyed, and that will take until the middle of next year. Rebels fighting the Syrian regime are not happy about the cooperation of Bashar al-Assad in destroying his chemical weapons because it makes him look like a reasonable statesman.

Pipeline: Investigators have found a 600-yard “super tunnel” built to smuggle drugs from Mexico into a warehouse in San Diego. The tunnel, estimated to cost as much as $1 million, has sophisticated engineering including electricity, ventilation and a rail system. Agents seized 8 tons of marijuana, 325 pounds of cocaine, and arrested three people. Two other super tunnels were discovered two years ago.

Eh?: Toronto police say they have the long-rumored video of the city’s Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack. It was recovered in the fraud investigation of a friend of the mayor. Two reporters for the Toronto Star say they were shown the video in May, but it has not been released publicly. Ford has denied he smoked crack and says he won’t resign.

Reversed: Only three days after a US District Judge ordered the delay of the new Texas abortion law, the US Court of Appeals in New Orleans reversed that decision. That means the new law goes into effect while its legality is argued in court. Authors of the law say it’s to protect the health and safety of women, but it drastically reduces access to abortion clinics.

  • A federal appeals court in NY has overturned a judge’s ruling ordering changes to the city’s “stop and frisk” police policy, and has removed the lower court judge from the case. The Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit said District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin had maneuvered herself to preside over the case and failed to maintain impartiality. Scheindlin had ruled that police were routinely stopping “blacks and Hispanics who would not have been stopped if they were white.”

Winers: The wine industry is uncorked over a report that we’re on the brink of a global wine shortage. A market study by Morgan Stanley researchers said production is down and demand is up, so wine will cost more and be less available. But a wine industry report says worldwide production is up nearly 9%. Morgan Stanley might have the numbers wrong, something investment banks have been doing a lot in recent years.

More Weiner: The follies of NY politician Anthony Weiner have inspired a new play, “The Weiner Monologues”, opening Wednesday in NY. Much of the dialogue is based on actual sex texts Weiner sent to women who were not his wife. The play opens with audience members receiving on their smart phones the selfie of Weiner’s famous member of congress.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
