HIV Returns, Nixon on Profanity

Nation:A Mississippi child thought to have been cured of HIV is again showing signs of the infection, according to federal health officials. Born with HIV, the child was aggressively treated and thought to be free of HIV in March 2013. The case had raised hopes that early intervention could cleanse an infant of the AIDS virus and it was considered proof that the disease is curable.

National Health: A new report says 20 million Americans have gotten health insurance under the provisions of Obamacare. That incudes people who bought health insurance through the marketplaces, the open market, and those who qualified for Medicare and Medicaid. The report by the Commonwealth Fund says 7.8 million people under age 26 enrolled through their parents’ plans, eight million went through the marketplaces, and 5 million bought direct from insurers.

War News: The number of dead in Gaza is over 100 as Israel continues to target Hamas militants and rocket-launching sites. Militants have fired at least 550 rockets and Israel has responded hitting 1,100 targets. Israel’s sophisticated “Iron Dome” defense system has shot down at least 110 incoming rockets.

>A rebel rocket attack has killed at least 23 Ukraine soldiers and wounded nearly 100. Pro-Russian separatists claim they destroyed a column of troops. They used a battery of Russian-made Grad rockets.

Home Run: Crippled San Francisco baseball fan Bryan Stow was awarded $18 million by a Los Angeles jury for injuries sustained when he was beaten senseless outside LA’s Dodger stadium in March 2011. Stow’s family says he will need round the clock medical care for the rest of his life. The Dodgers were levied $13.9 million and the two men who beat Stow were held responsible for the rest. Stow’s complaint against the Dodgers was that security was inadequate.

Yesterday in San Francisco a woman who tried to break up a fight outside AT&T Park was knocked out.

Press Enter: The Federal Trade Commission is suing Amazon.com for the return of millions of dollars children unwittingly spent through their parents’ credit cards on mobile apps. The suit involves applications like “Tap Zoo” and “Ice Age Village” that might be free to download but charge money when you get into deeper levels of the game. Kids spent money and the parents didn’t know until the credit bill arrived.

Small Screen: Rosie O’Donnell is returning as a co-host of the ladies talker “The View,” which lost all of its cast except Whoopi Goldberg in recent months. O’Donnell spent a year on the show in 2006-2007 but left abruptly after getting into an argument with then conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

The Obit Page:Eileen Ford, whose Ford Modeling Agency set the standard for American beauty and presented a bevy of what became familiar faces, has died in new York at age 92.

Among the models she launched: Candice Bergen, Ali MacGraw, Jean Shrimpton, Lauren Hutton, Brooke Shields, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Rachel Hunter, Cheryl Tiegs, Margaux Hemingway, Christie Brinkley, and Jerry Hall.

Ford founded the agency with her husband Jerry in 1946 and together they changed the business. But her success was in her eye for beauty that photographed well. She wouldn’t look at a girl less than 5-6 and used to say the prettiest girl on the block doesn’t always make the best model.

Nixonian: Audiotapes released by Vanity Fair magazine reveal President Richard Nixon holding forth on homosexuality … “once a society moves in that direction, the vitality goes out of that society” ….. and the notoriously profane president philosophized on language …. “A man drunk, and a man who swears, people will tolerate and say that’s a sign of masculinity or some other damn thing. We all do it. We all swear,” Nixon said. “But you show me a girl that swears and I’ll show you an awful unattractive person. … I mean, all femininity is gone. And none of the smart girls do swear, incidentally.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
