HIV Cure Claimed, Romney: “It kills me”

National: Doctors in Mississippi claim they have cured a baby girl born with HIV. The girl was treated with a cocktail of anti-HIV drugs when she was just 30 hours old. She’s 2 ½ now. If the claim holds true, this would be only the second time a person has been cured of HIV, and the first time for a child.

  • “It kills me not to be there in the White House doing what needs to be done,” Former republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in his first post-election interview with Fox News host Chris Wallace. He said the opportunity to fix the US economy is being squandered, but he didn’t say what he would do if he was President. Romney admitted that his secretly videotaped remarks about the sponging “forty-seven percent” of Americans seriously damaged his campaign. “It was a very unfortunate statement that I made,” he said. “It’s not what I meant. What I said is not what I believe.” His wife Ann said, “I’m happy to blame the media,” for their loss.

World: Almost 68% of Swiss voters approved a law that gives stockholders control over executive pay and bonuses. Swiss executives will no longer be able to give themselves bonuses for performance or golden parachutes when they leave without stockholder say-so.

PopeFest: The Cardinals are beginning to meet in Rome to select a new pope to replace Benededict XVI. The church wants a vote possibly as soon as next week in order to have the pope installed in time for Holy Week.

The Pew Report: In a statement issued by the Catholic church the British cardinal who resigned last week has openly admitted sexual misconduct. “I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been
times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me,” Cardinal O’Brien is quoted in the statement. He had been accused of “inappropriate acts” with three priests and one former priest.

At the Box: “Jack the Giant Slayer,” the Hollywood version of “Jack and the Beanstalk”, was number one but still a flop with just $28 million in sales. How do you spend $200 million and screw up a classic fairy tale? “Identity Thief” was number two for the weekend with sales now topping $100 million, and the comedy “21 And Over” was third at $9 million.

TubeNews: The hatchet-faced maid you love to hate will not be returning to season four of the British television series “Downton Abbey.” Siobhan Finneran, who plays the scheming O’Brien, told a British newspaper, “O’Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being – that was great to play.” But even she’s getting to dislike O’Brien.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
