German Bus Nightmare, Deregulation

World: As many as 18 people died today when a German tour bus collided with a truck and burned. The bus was carrying 46 elderly passengers from the German state of Saxony. Many other passengers were injured.

Deregulate: As the President tweets, a couple of Trump’s cabinet appointees are moving swiftly to dismantle what their positions were designed to protect: the environment and students.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has moved to undo, delay, and block more than 30 environmental rules. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is feeding college students back to the loan predators.

Pruitt, who previously spent years suing and fighting the EPA, has altered regulations regarding clean power, clean water, and the discharge of methane gas by oil drillers. He reversed a ruling banning a pesticide that the EPA’s own scientists have said is linked to damage of children’s nervous systems.

Pruitt has been tasked not with protecting the environment, but with doing away with what the Trump administration sees as regulations that are a burden to business.

The NY Times reports that Pruitt ignores his in-house experts and consults outside lawyers and lobbyists. He listens to the business he is supposed to regulate to protect the environment.

Pruitt says he plans to focus on obvious pollution, like cleaning up Superfund sites, but he has proposed a 25 percent cut in funding for that purpose.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has announced plans to dismantle Obama-era regulations governing predatory for-profit colleges. The “gainful employment” regulations starve the colleges of federal student loans when the schools fail to produce graduates who can earn a decent living and pay off their loans. About 300 colleges told they were “failing” have closed already.

Rather than improve, the schools just shut down. DeVos wants to remove the regulations and allow the colleges to keep suckering people into debt.

Fake President: President Trump continues his fight with the press, targeting CNN for a body slam. He posted a short video to his Twitter account yesterday in which he is portrayed wrestling and punching a figure whose head has been replaced by the logo for CNN.

The 28-second video appears to be an edited version of Trump’s appearance in WrestleMania. The little video ends with the CNN logo altered to say “FNN: Fraud News Network.”

In a speech on Saturday, he said: “The fake media tried to stop us from going to the White House. But I’m president and they’re not.”

CNN’s Brian Stelter tweeted that some colleagues take the video not as a joke, but a threat, and they are worried about their personal safety.

Nation: A man accused of killing an 18-year-old woman in an incident of road rage has turned himself in and is being held without bail in Pennsylvania. David Desper, 28, faces charges of first-degree murder, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said. Police said Desper shot Bianca Roberson as the two were jockeying for the same lane on a highway Wednesday evening outside Philadelphia. “He wasn’t happy, so he pulled out a gun and shot Bianca in the head, killing her instantly,” Hogan said.

—The first Tesla Model 3, the company’s mass-production electric car, is expected to come off the assembly line Friday. Tesla boss Elon Musk says the company will produce 100 of the cars in August and 1,500 or more in September. They plan to build 20,000 a month beginning in December.

The Zion Curtain: It’s not exactly the Iron Curtain, but the state of Utah has repealed a law requiring bars established since 2009 to have a frosted glass wall shielding customers, and in particular children, from seeing alcoholic drinks mixed and poured. The glass walls as known as the “Zion Curtain.”

Utah has some pretty arcane alcohol laws as the Mormon state pretends to be anti-alcohol while profiting enormously from it. Skiers like a drink at the end of the day

The Wall: To the entertainment of passing tourists, someone placed a 10-inch high border wall topped with barbed wire around Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It didn’t have Trump’s proposed solar panels on it, but Mexico will pay for the mini-wall later.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
