Deliberations, Run Over, Sharks!

Texas: The legislature has passed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in thecountry. The bill bans abortion after 20 weeks and requires abortion clinics to have the same standards as surgical centers, effectively closing most abortion clinics in the state.

National: The jury in the George Zimmerman murder trial began its second day of deliberations this morning. To find Zimmerman guilty of murder, they must find that he had ill will, hatred or spite towards 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The jury could also choose the lesser charge of manslaughter. The judge charged the jury with a clause of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law saying that if Zimmerman “was attacked in any place where he had a right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force.”

>A third Chinese national died in the hospital of injuries suffered in last week’s San Francisco air crash. Police also say one of two teenagers killed was on the ground covered with firefighting foam when she was run over by a fire truck. The coroner has not ruled whether the girl was killed in the crash or by the truck.

>The Texas teenager jailed after an accusation that he made a terrorist threat while having an Internet chat has been released on $500,000 bail put up by an anonymous donor. He and a friend were arguing about a video game and he made a remark about a school shooting he said was a joke.

World: A packed commuter train outside Paris derailed yesterday, killing six people and injuring dozens. More people may still be in the wreckage.Fire broke out yesterday on board an empty Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner parked at London’s Heathrow Airport. No cause was revealed. Dreamliners were grounded for four months earlier this year after their lithium ion batteries overheated and caused fire or electrical problems on several jets. The 787 was cleared for flight again in late April.

Landshark!: Social media are abuzz about the SyFy Network’s latest original flick “Sharknado”, which stretches the imagination to include a hurricane in California, sharks in a living room, and waterspouts teeming with sharks. SyFy has become a cable grindhouse of B-level horror movies. But the most imaginative fiction in “Sharknado” is that Ian Zierling, once of Beverly Hills 90210, could ever be a leading man.

No Really, They Did: The Fox television station in San Francisco reported on air that the NTSB confirmed the names of the Asiana air pilots as follows: Capt. Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
