Closure and Strikes, Wildfire, Sub Torpedoed

World: The State Department has ordered the evacuation of the US consulate in Lahore, Pakistan. In Yemen, US drones continue to hunt down suspected members of Al Qaeda. A strike yesterday killed three men travelling in a vehicle. Fourteen militants were reported killed in two strikes earlier yesterday, bringing the total to at least 28 suspected members of Al Qaeda killed by drones in the past two weeks.

National: Wildfire has destroyed two-dozen homes in the mountains 90 miles east of Los Angeles. The fire has been measured at 22 square miles, which is big even by western standards. Five hundred homes are threatened and nearly two thousand people have had to evacuate.

  • Miami police are investigating the death of a skate boarding graffiti artist after police subdued him with a Taser. Israel Hernandez-Llach, 18, was caught spray-painting a closed McDonald’s restaurant. A witness described the officers high-fiving each other after they Tasered the young man.
  • Two friends of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were indicted yesterday for obstruction of justice. The two former students from Kazakhstan had taken evidence from Tsarnaev’s dormitory room and put it in the trash. They are not accused of being part of the bomb plot.

Scrap Heap: The Navy is paying $54 million to dismantle a $900 million nuclear attack submarine damaged in a 2012 dry dock fire that was set by a repair worker who wanted to get out of work early that day. The Navy says it can’t afford the $700 million it would cost to fix the ship.

Social Media: A South Miami man is accused of killing his wife then posting a picture of her body on his Facebook page with the message, “takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news.”

The Obit Page: Karen Black, the prolific actress who appeared in some of the classic counterculture movies of the 1970s including “Easy Rider” and “Five Easy Pieces” with Jack Nicholson, has died of cancer in Los Angeles at age 74. Black’s slightly cross-eyed appearance brought a quirky look to the beautiful actress’s performances. She claimed her career was ruined after appearing in the flop “The Day of the Locust”, based on Nathanael West’s Hollywood novel.

Comeback: Twenty-seven year old Brian Banks, who spent five years in prison on a false rape accusation and missed a chance to pursue a career in football, played linebacker last night in the first pre-season game for the Atlanta Falcons. Banks said he was thrilled even while sitting on the bench for most of the game.
