Cleveland Cop Acquitted, A Beautiful Mind

From Pilot Knob, NY.

Nation: Protesters hit the streets immediately yesterday after the acquittal of a white Cleveland police officer who killed two unarmed black people in a car back in November, 2012. Several people were arrested last night.

Officer Michael Brelo was one of 14 cops who had fired 137 rounds, killing Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams. Brelo himself fired 49 times. At the end of the incident Brelo jumped on the hood of the car pumping bullets through the windshield.

The chase began after reports of gunfire from the car, although it was later found that the cause was backfire from the exhaust. The chase went on for 22 miles, ending when the car occupied by Russell and his passenger, Williams, was cornered and peppered with gunfire.

Judge John P. O’Donnell said, “The state did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant, Michael Brelo, knowingly caused the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams.”

Beautiful Mind: Nobel Prize winning mathematician John Nash and his wife were killed yesterday in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. Nash and his wife were riding in a taxi and were ejected on impact. Nash was 86, his wife Alicia, 82.

Nash was played by Russell Crowe in the movie “A Beautiful Mind,” about the brilliant mathematician who struggled with schizophrenia. In real life Nash distinguished himself with work on economics, game theory, and artificial intelligence.

The Weather Report: Flash floods inundated at least 350 homes overnight in Hays County, Texas, southeast of Austin. Heavy rains also caused flash floods in Tulsa and Oklahoma City yesterday. Homes were flooded and cars stranded in parking lots.

World: Ireland, one of the most Catholic countries in the world, has voted overwhelmingly over church objections to approve of same sex marriage. The issue attracted a 60 percent turnout and of those, 62 percent voted in favor, making Ireland the first country to approve of gay marriage by a popular vote.

>Malaysian authorities say they have found a series of mass graves of what are believed to be Muslim migrants who fled Myanmar and Bangladesh. It’s similar to a discovery in Thailand of bodies in shallow graves left at abandoned migrant camps. The traffickers sometimes hold the migrants hostage while extorting their families.

About 200 migrants were rescued at sea by the Myanmar Navy just today.

Permawar: Islamic State fighters have massacred at least 400 people in the captured city of Palmyra, according to Syrian state media. ISIS took the city of 50,000 people, including its ancient Roman ruins, on Wednesday. They have killed people they accuse of loyalty to the government and failure to cooperate.

The Sports Page: The University of Maryland faces Denver tomorrow in the NCAA college lacrosse finals. It’s the first time a team outside of the New England to North Carolina lacrosse axis has made it to the final game.

>Drivers in today’s Indianapolis 500 have been plagued by a series of serious crashes during practice run… four in a week including two cars that flipped. It’s a little unusual. Under suspicion as a possible cause are the new “aero kits” of body spoilers, including airfoils mounted in front of the forward tires.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
