Buzzed in the Baltic, 60 Point Finish

Jetwash: Russian fighter bombers over the Baltic Sea have buzzed a US warship as many as 31 times in recent days in what one US official calls “one of the most aggressive acts in recent memory.” Approaching the guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook in what has been described as an attack pattern, some of the jets buzzed just 30 feet over the deck of the ship.

The Cook was operating in international waters about 70 miles from Russian territory, but the Russians have been increasingly aggressive in the past two years because of tensions with the West over Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

Viral News: Although it was in little doubt, the Centers for Disease Control announced there is a direct link between the mosquito-borne Zika virus and serious birth defects. “There is no longer any doubt that Zika causes microcephaly,” an abnormally small skull and brain, said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the CDC director. And most frightening, he said, “Never before in history has there been a situation where a bite from a mosquito can result in a devastating malformation.” So far there have been about 700 cases of Zika in the US, none of them actually contracted within the country.

Black Lives: Racism is rampant in the Chicago police department, according to a special report issued yesterday. “CPD’s own data gives validity to the widely held belief the police have no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color,” according to the report. “Stopped without justification, verbally and physically abused, and in some instances arrested, and then detained without counsel — that is what we heard about over and over again.”

Peace Talks: In what amounts to a political summit meeting to make peace, Fox News host Megyn Kelly met for an hour yesterday with Donald Trump. Kelly said on the air last night that, “We met for about an hour, just the two of us, and had a chance to clear the air.” It has yet to be announced whether Trump will appear on Kelly’s show for an interview.

The meeting was called by Kelly, who has been distressed by Trump’s attacks on her character and journalistic ethics. The standoff has been a mess for Fox, which is the unofficial mouthpiece for the Republican Party. Fox needs Trump more than he needs them and their star anchor has been unable to get him on the air.

Affluenza: Ethan Couch, the Texas teenager who successfully avoided jail after killing four people in a drunk driving crash by arguing that he was raised rich and spoiled, has been sentenced to two years in adult prison. Couch had convinced a judge he suffered “affluenza” and was out on probation when he skipped to Mexico with his mother.

The local sheriff said Couch is not the same brat he used to be. “I do believe Ethan Couch is not the same person he was when he came to jail,” Sheriff Dee Anderson said. “The time he’s spent, it’s a rude awakening for anyone.”

Nerves: In a breakthrough with great potential, a team of doctors has found a way for a man who is paralyzed from the chest down to move his fingers without mechanical help. With a computer chip planted in his brain, 24-year-old Ian Burkhart is able to focus his thoughts to move his fingers and perform simple tasks, even though he has no feeling. With the implant connected to a computer. Burkhart can pour from a bottle, pick up a straw and even play a guitar video game.

Burkhart broke his neck in a swimming accident five years ago. The new technology is not a cure for paralysis but a way to rewire the body and restore some movement.

In the Paint: Kobe Bryant, 37, one of the greatest players in the history of professional basketball, scored 60 points in the last game of his career in Los Angeles last night. Also last night. The Golden State Warriors led by basketball wizard Stephen Curry beat the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104 to set a record for NBA wins in one season — 73.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
