Brussels Still Alert, The Trump Database

World at War: Central Brussels was in shutdown last night as soldiers patrolled the streets and investigators were on the hunt for Salah Abdeslam, the man who thought to have been the planner of the Paris attacks. By some reports he has been in the Brussels area trying to escape to Syria.

Red Turns Blue: In a major upset, little known Democrat John Bel Edwards, beat Republican US Senator David Vitter in a runoff election yesterday to become the next governor of Louisiana. Edwards is a state representative: anti-abortion, pro-gun, and a West Point graduate. He won 56 percent of the vote.

He’s said one of the first things he will do is expand Medicare under Obamacare, giving health insurance to about a quarter million people.

Edwards will replace Republican Gov. Bobby Jindahl, whose unpopularity may have contributed to Vitter’s defeat. Vitter told his supporters yesterday that he will not run for re-election to the Senate next year.

The Donald: Doubling down on his suggestion that the US should keep a database of all Muslims in the country, Donald Trump said yesterday that if he’s elected all Syrian refugees will be sent back. “If I win they’re going back. We can’t have ‘em,” he said.

In a previous interview with MSNBC’s Vaughn Hillyard about maintaining a Muslim database, the conversation, in part, was this:

Hillyard: “For Muslims specifically, how do you get them registered into a database?

Trump: It would be just good management. What you have to do is good management procedures.

Hillyard: Do you go to mosques and sign these people up?

Trump: Different places. You sign ‘em up at different places. But it’s all about management. Our country has no management.”

Trump is polling at 25 percent popularity in polls of Republican candidates followed by Ben Carson at 22 percent and Marco Rubio at 10 percent.

World: Power to the entire Crimean Peninsula was cut yesterday when the towers carrying the electricity lines from Ukraine were blown up. Two million people in Crimea were left without power. Despite having been taken from Ukraine by Russia, Crimea still gets its power and water from Ukraine.

Here it Comes: Snow covered the Midwest yesterday from Wisconsin to South Dakota. It was 16 inches deep in some areas. More than 500 flights through Chicago were cancelled.

It’s not unheard of to have this much snow so early in the Midwest, but it’s a little unusual.

Social Notes: Kylie Jenner, who is well known for being well known, has broken up with the rapper Tyga, who is known mostly for hanging out with Kylie Jenner. Or maybe they’re not breaking up. Tyga might be the man posted by Kylie in a mysterious Snapchat photo after word broke that they are split. It’s fascinating. We’ll try to keep up with breaking developments. In the meantime, name just one song by Tyga.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
