Arrest in Mansion Murders, Erin Go Gay

From Poughkeepsie, NY.

Most Foul: DNA found on a slice of pizza has led investigators to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a Washington DC family of three and their housekeeper last week in a DC mansion. Daryn Dylon Wint, 34, was arrested during a traffic stop in Northeast Washington for the murder of Savvas Savopoulos, his wife Amy, their 10-year-old son Philip and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa. Wint is described as a former employee of Savopoulos’s company.

The four died of blunt force trauma and one of them had been tortured before the house was set on fire, investigators say. The family and the housekeeper were held captive overnight before an employee of Savopoulos brought $40,000 in cash to the door. A pizza was delivered to the house the night of May 13, evidently while the four were still being held.

The couple has two teenage daughters who were away at school at the time.

Nation: The Senate yesterday voted to end debate on giving President Obama “fast track” authority to negotiate trade deals. It’s a big step in giving the president what he wants, but there’s a lot of opposition in the House, particularly among Democrats worried about job losses.

Trade Promotion Authority, as it is formally called, would let the president make trade agreements and send them through Congress without tinkering for a simple majority vote.

>Six Baltimore police officers have been indicted, one of them for second-degree murder, in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray who died of injuries suffered in their custody. The driver of the police van that took Gray away from the scene of his arrest was charged with “second-degree depraved heart murder.” Gray was black, and so are three of the officers accused. One is a woman.

World: Ireland voted today on whether to legalize same sex marriage. Only 20 years ago the heavily Catholic country was the last in Europe to decriminalize homosexuality. Today, over the objection of churches, polling suggest the Irish may become the first country to legalize gay marriage by popular vote.

GSA: The president of the Boy Scouts of America yesterday called for an end to the organization’s ban on gay scout leaders saying, “we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be.” BSA President Robert Gates, who is also the former director of the CIA and secretary of defense, said “any other alternative will be the end of us as a national movement.”

Gates spoke at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlanta. Ending the official ban, though, might not end the discrimination against gay scout leaders. Many of the local troops are hosted by churches that disapprove of homosexuality.

He Said It: Unannounced presidential candidate Jeb Bush told a gathering in New Hampshire that, while he admits climate change is taking place, it’s not clear human activity is causing it. “I don’t think the science is clear of what percentage is man-made and what percentage is natural. It’s convoluted,” Bush said. He went on, “For the people to say the science is decided on this is really arrogant, to be honest with you.”

Bush’s statement distinguishes him as a rare Republican who admits climate change is real, but he’s still in the pack when it comes to denying the science that explains it.

Career Moves: Rapper Flavor Flav was arrested in Las Vegas early Thursday on charges of driving under the influence, speeding, holding less than an ounce of marijuana and having open alcohol in his car. So who said Flavor Flav couldn’t even get arrested these days?

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
