Amtrak Derail, The Campaign Mess

Nation: An Amtrak train bound from Chicago to Los Angeles derailed in Cimarron, Kan. overnight, leaving five passenger cars on their side. Two-dozen people were sent to the hospital.

Permawar: Terrorists struck in Turkey and the Ivory Coast yesterday, killing dozens of people.

A car bomb in a busy central area of Ankara killed at least 34. Turkish militants who call themselves the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons claimed responsibility. The attack came just weeks after the bombing of a military convoy killed 28 people. The Kurds have been fighting Turkey for autonomy while also fighting the Islamic State.

The Turkish military has already struck back.

In Ivory Coast, gunmen attacked hotels in a seaside resort area. Fourteen civilians and two soldiers were killed. An al Qaeda affiliate said it was their handiwork.

The Campaign: One thing the rest of the presidential candidates agree on is that Donald Trump’s rhetoric is causing violence at his campaign events. Democrat Bernie Sanders said at a town hall event last night “Donald Trump is literally inciting violence with his supporters. He is saying if you go out and beat somebody up, that’s okay, I’ll pay the legal fees.”

Press Gang: A reporter for the right wing Breitbart News has resigned saying her organization didn’t back her up after she claimed she had been manhandled by one of Donald Trump’s aides. Michelle Fields said in a statement, “”I do not believe Breitbart News has adequately stood by me during the events of the past week.”

Reporters covering Trump, like heckling opponents, have been treated like enemies and Fields is one of at least two thrown to the ground. Breitbart bosses publicly questioned Fields’ account of the incident, despite backup from witnesses, and ordered staff members not to talk about it. An editor who resigned in the wake of the incident said Breitbart Chairman Steve Bannon “has shaped the company into Trump’s personal Pravda,” a reference to the old Soviet newspaper “Truth.”

The Full Snowden: While CBS stretched the announcement of the NCAA basketball bracket into an agonizing two hour gabfest yesterday, someone leaked the bracket online, giving fans instant gratification. One fan tweeted, “Bracket leak guy is the hero America needed.”

The Obit Page: Bill Wade, a quarterback out of Vanderbilt University who went on to lead the Chicago Bears to the 1963 NFL championship, died in Nashville at age 83. Wade was the No. 1 draft pick in 1952 and served two years in the Navy before reporting to the NFL. He ran with the ball to score Chicago’s only two touchdown’s in their 14-10 win over the New York Giants.

>Keith Emerson, a member of the 70s British rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot Friday at home in Santa Monica, Calif. Emerson considered a key figure in the development of progressive rock.

>Ben Bagdikian, a newspaper reporter, foreign correspondent, journalism teacher and advocate for professional standards for more than 50 years, died in Berkeley, Calif. at age 96. He was the man who accepted the infamous Pentagon Papers for printing in The Washington Post and wrote the book, “The Media Monopoly” about the threat that concentration of ownership poses to the quality of Journalism in America.

Dept. of Dubious Endorsements: Former Cincinnati Reds great Pete Rose, who was banned from baseball for life after betting on his own games, endorsed Donald Trump for President with a signed baseball saying, “Mr. Trump, Please make America Great Again. Pete Rose.” One thing certain, Trump can’t make Pete Rose great again.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
