Egypt Unrest Continues, Nightclub Pileup

World:  Disturbances continued in Egypt today despite the declaration of a state of emergency in three major Egyptian cities following days of civil and political unrest. President Mohamed Morsi took the action after four days of rioting in which police have lost control. Many Egyptians are not happy that Morsi is tilting toward Islamic government. The situation is aggravated in Port Said where 21 soccer fans were given the death sentence for a fatal riot nearly a year ago. Thirty people have died in protests following the court decision.

  • Some witnesses say there was a pileup at the front door as people tried to escape fire inside the Kiss nightclub in Brazil where about 230 victims are now reported dead. Reports say the club was packed with 2,000 young people, about double capacity. Some witnesses said security guards briefly tried to block patrons from leaving without paying their tab.
  • Chances of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad staying in power are fading according to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “I think that with every day, every week and every month, the chances of his preservation are getting smaller and smaller,” Medvedev is quoted as saying in the transcript of an interview released by his office. Russia has backed the Assad regime, forcing the US to largely keep out of Syria’s civil war.

National: Immigration reform will be proposed today by four Democratic and four Republican senators who worked together on the bill. Their law would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants now in the country while stemming the flow of people coming in.

  • President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down for a rare joint interview on “60 Minutes” last night. The two broke no news while talking about how much they liked and respected each other. Mr. Obama did cause a bit of a ripple in the middle of the gun control debate when he said he likes to go skeet shooting at Camp David. The interview was proposed by The White House and had the look of a tee-off for Mrs. Clinton’s future aspirations.

By Design: Jennifer Lawrence caused gasps last night at the SAG Awards when her blue designer dress appeared to rip in two above the knees. But the dress was actually a two-piece engineering marvel that fell back into place denying concerned viewers a lingering look at her thighs.

The Box Score: “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” took in $19 million. Someone please post a spoiler on the Internet. The horror pic “Mama”, which is as it’s billed, a horror, came in second.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
