Missiles, Illegals, and Becks Ends It

Syria: Russia has sent advanced anti-ship missiles to Syria that could be used to hold off a naval blockade of the embattled government. This underlines Russian commitment to the Syrian regime and illustrates why it is difficult for the US to make a military intervention.

On the Border: Leaders on both sides of the House say they have reached a tentative agreement for immigration reform. The bill still faces major obstacles. Some influential members of Congress only want to tighten the borders and allow guest workers rather than grant citizenship to long-term illegal residents.

National: CBS News reports that bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev left a note in the boat where he was found hiding outside Boston. The note, according to CBS, said the Marathon bombings were retribution for the US killings of Muslims in the Middle East. The Boston deaths and injuries were described as “collateral damage”. Tsarnaev is reported to have written, “When you attack one Muslim you attack all Muslims.”

  • New Orleans police have arrested two brothers wanted for the Mother’s Day parade shooting that wounded 20 people. Police say the two had a plan to shoot up the parade. Shawn Scott, 20, and his brother Akein, 19, are described as gang members. They’re being held on $10 million bail.

Copwatch: After 12 years, the Los Angeles Police Department has been taken off federal probation. In 2001 the LAPD consented to federal supervision rather than be completely taken over by the feds to end violence and corruption. The federal judge who entered the decree ended it, saying the LAPD has made the necessary reforms.

End It Like Beckham: British “footballer” David Beckham says he’s retiring from the game at age 38. One of the soccer greats, Beckham is known as much for giving the sport a sexy image as for putting the ball in the net. Despite his looks, skill and fame Beckham is known for his humility and for giving it everything when he’s on the “pitch”.

Bullseye:  A Texas company has developed a new rifle with a computerized sighting system fit for a jet fighter. The TrackingPoint rifle has a laser range finder, a ballistic computer, and streaming video that can be sent to a nearby iPad for recording. Pull the trigger and the gun decides when to actually fire. It almost never misses at 500 yards. $22,000.

Anyone Out There?: Venezuela has run out of toilet paper. The government blames the press for creating a panic, but some economists say low state-controlled prices always create shortages. The government says it is importing 50 million rolls, so wait, they’ll be there in a minute.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
