National: The US filed charges against computer contractor Edward Snowden, who revealed the NSA’s giant secret electronic surveillance program. The document charges espionage and theft of government property. The US also asked Hong Kong to detain Snowden. His supporters are seeking asylum for him in Iceland, but he has to be there to apply for it.

  • The sentence for Enron crook Jeffrey Skilling has been reduced to 14 years from 24 in a deal with prosecutors. For reduced time, Skilling agreed to end his appeals and release his $40 million fortune to be distributed to victims of the Enron scam.
  • A friend of journalist Michael Hastings says the reporter claimed he was being investigated by the FBI, according to television station KTLA. The FBI denies Hastings was under investigation for any reason. The friend told KTLA Hastings was going to “go off the radar for a bit.” Hastings died about 4:30 AM Tuesday when his Mercedes hit a tree and burst into flame. The car hit with such impact that the engine landed 100 feet away.
  • A new documentary claims that TWA fight 800, which crashed off Long Island in 1996, was brought down by an external explosion, probably a missile. Some former NTSB investigators support the theory. The investigation at the time said an electrical short blew up the fuel tank.

Southern Fried: The Food Network is dropping Southern cooking queen Paula Deen when her contract expires at the end of June. She has three shows on the network. Deen admitted in a lawsuit deposition that she had used racial language and tolerated both racist jokes and pornography at work. In a video apology posted online Deen opened with “Hello, y’all” and said “I am here to say that I am so sorry.”  For once, she didn’t add butter.

World: Nearly 600 people are dead and thousands missing after flash floods and mudslides in northern India. Cars, trucks, and entire houses have been swept into the Ganges River.

  • Flood waters are receeding in downtown Calgary after as many as 100,000 Canadians had to evacuate. Three people died. Water in the hockey arena reached the 10th row of seats.

Look Up: This is the weekend of the Supermoon, the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. Sunday at 4:32 am PDT the moon will be 16,000 miles closer to earth than usual. But it might be hard to see the difference with the naked eye.
