Morsi Deadline Passes, End of Life

World: The deadline given Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi by the military to share power with opponents expired at 10 am EST. A spokesman for Morsi said,  “It is better for a president … to die standing like a tree”. Twenty-three people were reported killed overnight in violence at Cairo University and state television has been taken over by troops although it is still on the air. Protesters filled Cairo’s Tahrir Square again yesterday calling for Morsi’s ouster. Seven people were killed and as many as 100 others were injured by gunfire.

  • The jet carrying Bolivian President Evo Morales home from Moscow was forced to land in Vienna and searched by Austrian authorities for NSA leaker Edward Snowden. It is highly unusual because the plane would have had diplomatic immunity. Snowden was not on board.

National: The White House has delayed until 2015 a crucial provision in healthcare reform that requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance. The provision fines businesses $2,000 for every employee they fail to insure. This delay gives them more time to comply, but some Republican critics see it as an admission of failure for Obamacare.

  • June was the best month in six years for the auto business, according to car companies. After hanging on to their old rides during the recession, Americans are replacing old SUVs and buying fuel-efficient cars. Much of the growth is powered by sales of pickup trucks spurred by the recovery of the construction and housing industries.

End of Life: A group of Scottish scientists say one day the last remaining life on earth will be microbes that live deep underground. One scientist told the BBC, “There won’t be very much oxygen present, so they need to be able to survive in low or zero-oxygen environments, high pressures, and high salinities because of evaporating oceans.” It also fits the survival skills of bankers.

Take Out: The Center for Science in the Public Interest, known for condemning most of the world’s cuisines as unhealthy, declared Long John Silver’s “Big Catch” dinner the worst restaurant meal in America. Long John’s lists the fish as 7-8 oz. of Haddock, but CPSI says 3 oz. of that are trans fats and batter. “Big Catch” has 1320 calories and 33 grams of trans fats. Reaching for the quotable sound bite, CPSI’s director said, “Long John Silver’s Big Catch meal deserves to be buried 20,000 leagues under the sea.” Reaching even further he said, “I’d call it America’s Deadliest Catch.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
