Illinois Short, Nazi in Minneapolis

 National: The State of Illinois is $100 billion short on its employee pension obligations and doesn’t know how it will pay. The governor has called a special session of the legislature to deal with it. All the states took a hit during the recession, but Illinois has the most underfunded pension plan. It’s a potential disaster for state employees who usually are not covered by Social Security.

  • A man described as the former leader of a Nazi-SS unit in World War II was found living quietly for the last 60 years in Minneapolis. Records found by the Associate Press revealed that 94-year-old Michael Karkoc, originally from Ukraine, failed to say that he had served in the SS Galician Division, which was responsible for burning villages and killing civilians. He spent his life working as a carpenter.

World: Riot police cleared out Istanbul’s Gezi Park, which has been occupied for weeks by Turkish protesters opposing a government plan to use the park for a real estate development. Nearby residents banged pots and pans and motorists honked their horns as police used water cannon and teargas on the protesters. The action came after a warning by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he would use force if protesters didn’t leave the park. Erdogan supporters are holding a rally today.

The Roundup: Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Fox News called NSA leaker Edward Snowden a traitor and possibly a Chinese spy; Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have a baby girl; The World Naked Bike Ride had its ninth annual event to draw attention to the importance of cycling for exercise and preserving the air; The name of the new president of Iran is spelled Rowhani in the US and Rouhani in England but either way it’s easier than  Ahmadinejad.

City In The Mist: A medieval city lost for 1,200 years in a mountain region of Cambodia has been discovered by Australian archeologists. The city of Mahendraparvata is about 25 miles from the famed ruins of Ankor Wat and is about 350 years older. The location was discovered with an airborne laser-scanning device that detected stone structures in the jungle.

Sporting News: The Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins took it into overtime again in only the second of the best of seven Stanley Cup playoffs. Boston popped one with 6:12 left in the first overtime to win 2-1. In just two games they have played the time equivalent of more than three.
